Symbols in a Dolls House free essay sample

This might be emblematic of the defective condition of her marriage and of her emotions about it. Mrs Linde, who is not so much hasty but rather more develop than Nora, proposes fixing it, and it is Mrs Linde who concludes that Nora and Torvald must be made to confront reality with regards to Noras mystery. She trusts it is advantageous to the marriage, however in Noras see the marriage, similar to the dress, is unrecoverable. The Tarantella The Tarantella was a wild southern Italian move, by and large moved by a couple or line of couples. The move was named after the tarantula bug, whose toxic chomp was erroneously accepted to cause tarantism, a wild inclination for wild moving. The fix recommended by specialists was for the victim to move to weariness. Present day clinicians estimate that the genuine reason for the turmoil, which accomplished its most prominent in the nineteenth century and which included manifestations of what might now be called insanity, was not the bugs chomp but rather the curbed ethics of that age. We will compose a custom article test on Images in a Dolls House or on the other hand any comparable theme explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page The main outlet for energetic self-articulation, they reason, was the Tarantella. In this light, it is huge that Torvald advises Nora to rehearse the Tarantella while he closes himself away in his office: I will hear nothing; you can make as much commotion however you see fit. While Torvald is apparently being liberal towards his better half, the picture of her rehearsing this energetic move alone and unheard underscores her separation inside her marriage. She convinces him to watch her training the move so as to forestall him opening Krogstads letter. He attempts to get control over her ferocity with his directions, however she disregards his remarks and moves perpetually fiercely, her hair coming free. The folklore of tarantism recommends that she is moving so as to free herself of a dangerous toxic substance. Contingent upon how we wish to decipher this imagery, the toxic substance might be the danger presented by Krogstads disclosures, or the toxic substance of misdirection and affectation that describes the Helmer marriage. Light is regularly used to represent Noras condition of mindfulness. After Torvald cases to be man enough to take everything upon himself (Act 2) and keeping in mind that she is conversing with Dr Rank, the light starts to develop dim. This imagery alludes to two procedures. To start with, Nora is utilizing her sexual engaging quality to control the withering Dr Rank into giving her cash to take care of her advance. When Dr Rank admits his adoration for her, she is stunned out of her game. She gets a light, disclosing to Dr Rank that he should feel embarrassed about himself since the light has come. Light additionally seems to represent expectation and otherworldly recovery when Dr Rank is talking in code to Nora about his coming demise (Act 3). He discusses demise as a major dark cap that will make him imperceptible, a picture of destruction of life. In any case, Nora presents to him a light for his stogie as she wishes him farewell. Dr Rank loves her, and regardless of her occasionally questionable conduct towards him, she has given him getting, sympathy and acknowledgment. She additionally implies now, it appears, to go along with him in death by ending it all. Their bond is spoken to in front of an audience by the picture of them standing together in the pool of light from her match a casing that bars Torvald. Christmas tree In Norway, Christmas is a significant family festivity, however the focal point of the celebrations and the opening of presents happens on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is something of a disappointment. This is resembled by occasions in the play. Toward the start of the play on Christmas Eve, Nora still trusts her union with be cheerful. We see her requesting the Christmas tree to be acquired and demanding that it is covered up until she has beautified it. Emblematically, this alarms us to the way that there are concealed perspectives to life in this family unit, that a deliberately made appearance is the thing that issues, and that Nora is the attendant of appearances. Altogether, when she is attempting to cajole Torvald into keeping Krogstad in his activity, she causes him to notice how lovely the blossoms on the tree look. By Christmas Day, the tree is deprived of its trimmings and its candles have worn out (a connection with the image of light). By this point, Torvald has would not keep Krogstad in his activity and Nora feels sure that Krogstad will uncover all to him. The deliberately kept up appearance of the upbeat marriage is crumbling under the infringement of truth. New Years Day New Years Day is customarily seen as a fresh start, and the Helmers toward the start of the play are anticipating simply such a fresh start. Torvald is because of start another and better paid occupation at the bank, and Nora envisions being liberated from her obligation. Before the finish of the play, Nora has in fact made a fresh start, however it is of a very extraordinary nature, comprising in leaving Torvald and her kids. Different characters also enter new stages throughout their life. Mrs Linde and Krogstad start their coexistence after extensive stretches of affliction, and Dr Rank kicks the bucket, which can be viewed as an end or a change, contingent upon ones perspective.

Industry 4.0 Everything You Need To Know

Industry 4.0 Everything You Need To Know Everywhere you look, information technology now plays a major role. Major industries nowadays are suddenly finding themselves dependent, in large part, on information technology. This approach of combining industry and the latest advancements in technology â€" particularly information technology â€" is sometimes referred to as the “fourth Industrial Revolution”, alluding to that significant era in history when the fields of agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation, among others, transitioned to adapting new processes, policies, techniques and practices. Today, it is simply called Industry 4.0.If we were to look at historical records, it would appear that they were right in tagging Industry 4.0 as the fourth Industrial Revolution. It started with the Victorian industrial revolution in the 19th century, when factory production was introduced in what was predominantly a farming economy in England. The second industrial revolution, which took place in the middle of the 1800s al l the way up to World War I, mass production took root, spurred further by the introduction of steel and electricity to power up manufacturing plants. In the middle of the 1900s, digital technology started to make its presence felt, slowly replacing the old (analog and mechanical) way of doing things. We now see a move towards complete digitization of processes, and that is what Industry 4.0 is all about. Hence, the term “Industry 4.0”. © Shutterstock.com | Monkey Business ImagesIn particular, we will explore 1) the industry 4.0 fundamentals, 2) design principles, 3) building blocks in industry 4.0, and 4) challenges and the future of industry 4.0.INDUSTRY 4.0 FUNDAMENTALSSome dub it as “making the manufacturing industry fully computerized”. Others say it is a way to “make industrial production online”. In the United States, the term “industrial internet” has been coined by industrial giant General Electric, but there is another term that is gaining more popularity: “the internet of things”. In others’ opinion, it is a way for businesses to keep up with the rapid pace of changes driven by the evolution of information technology. All these have grains of truth in them. What, exactly, is Industry 4.0? Many people are treating it as if it is a new concept, utilizing newly developed technology and teaching new “tricks”. In a way, that is true. To be more precise, Industry 4.0 is essentially a new ap proach in manufacturing that makes use of the latest technological inventions and innovations, particularly in information and communication technology.Industry 4.0 involves the use of advancements in communication and information technology to increase the degree of automation and digitization of production, manufacturing and industrial processes. The ultimate goal is to manage the entire value chain process, by improving efficiencies in the production process and coming up with products and services that are of superior quality. Thus, what we have is the factory of the future, aptly named “Smart Factory”. This factory of the future is envisioned to be one that operates with quiet efficiency, where all processes are performed and conducted seamlessly and smoothly. The “internet of things” term used by many experts may be quite limiting, especially when you consider the fact that the industry 4.0 environment has four aspects: the internet of things, the internet of data, the internet of services, and the internet of people. That is probably the reason why there is a greater preference for the phrase “internet of everything”, instead of just the “internet of things”.But what gave rise to this fourth industrial revolution? Experts narrowed down four drivers that spurred this transition to further digitization of the manufacturing industry. The drastic and rapid increase in data volumes, computing power and connectivity. This is especially seen in new wide-area networks with low power utilization. Industries find themselves facing the prospect of having to use new data in their manufacturing operations. The advancement of analytics capabilities. Product development requires analysis for it to be successful, and the stronger and solid the analysis is, the higher would be the quality of the end product. A lot of analysis is also required to improve efficiencies of business operations. The introduction of new form of human and machine interactions. These include the development of augmented-reality systems, and systems that make full use of touch interfaces and other hands-free operating systems. The innovations in easing the transfer of digital data to something physically usable. Examples include the improvements in advanced robotics and the onset of 3D printing technology as well as rapid prototyping. With these drivers at work, industries are finding it increasingly imperative to keep up with the times, especially if they plan to remain competitive.Four Main Characteristics of Industry 4.0Proponents of Industry 4.0 named four main and distinct characteristics:1. Vertical integration of smart production systemsSmart factories, which are essentially the core of Industry 4.0, cannot work on a standalone basis. There is a need for the networking of smart factories, smart products, and other smart production systems. The essence of vertical networking stems from the use of cyber-physical production systems (CPPSs) which lets factories and manufacturing plants react quickly and appropriately to variables, such as demand levels, stock levels, machine defects and unforeseen delays.Similarly, networking and integration also involve the smart logistics and marketing services of an organization, as well as its smart services, since production is customized in such a way that it is individualized and targeted specifically to customers.2. Horizontal Integration through global value chain networksIntegration will facilitate the establishment and maintenance of networks that create and add value. The first relationship that would come to mind when we talk of horizontal integration would be the one between the business partners and the customers. However, it could also mean the integration of new business models across countries and even across continents, making for a global network.3. Through-engineering across the entire value chainThe whole value chain is subjected to through-engineering, where the complete product lif e cycle is highlighted. Under other circumstances, focus would be on the manufacturing process alone, with little to no regard of the output. Industry 4.0 covers both the production process and the end product.4. Acceleration through exponential technologiesBusiness operations, particularly those involved in manufacturing, entail the use of many technologies, most of them already existing and operational for a long time. However, technologies are evolving by the day, becoming bigger and better. Soon enough, these technologies have become capable of being applied on a mass-market basis, becoming more accessible by more and more businesses and industries.Benefits of Industry 4.0You might think that Industry 4.0, once it fully rolls out, will benefit only the manufacturing industries. You would be wrong.Industry 4.0’s impact is more far-reaching than that. It affects the entire value chain, including the producers and manufacturers, suppliers, and workers. The education sector will h ave to step up to produce more talent equipped with the skill sets and competencies required in Industry 4.0. Software and technology developers will also have to look into newer, better and bigger offerings. Governments, on the other hand, are expected to do their share, particularly when it comes to the infrastructure required for systems to operate successfully and smoothly. Of particular note are smart infrastructures, which include those that involve smart mobility and smart logistics. All these players ask, “The current system is working; why should we make the switch to Industry 4.0? What’s in it for us?”Increased competitiveness of businesses: In fact, Industry 4.0 is expected to enhance global competitiveness. In this vision, even countries known to have low labor costs and wages will be eyed by large industries as their production areas.Increased productivity: With the increase in efficiencies will also come improvements in productivity levels in the manufacturing sec tors. Feasibility studies conducted in Germany show that productivity in the manufacturing sector will increase by more than 60%. In fact, in the automotive industry, productivity is expected to increases by 10 to 20 percent, once Industry 4.0 is fully implemented.Increased revenue: Naturally, the manufacturing sector will also see an increase in its revenues. Industry 4.0 is seen as one of the major drivers for the growth of revenue levels, even as its implementation will also require significant investments by businesses. Cost-benefit analysis will show later on that revenue will increase faster and higher than the costs incurred to automate or digitize the manufacturing process.Increased employment opportunities and enhanced human and IT resources management: Employment rates will also increase as the demand for talent and manpower, particularly in the fields of engineering and mechanical work, will also rise. But it will not be limited to the mechanical-engineering pool alone si nce, depending on the industry or manufacturing sector, many types of skills will be required.Optimization of manufacturing processes: Having integrated IT systems within the production process will certainly make the most out of the resources at hand. Processes will be streamlined, and there will be increased collaboration between and among producers, suppliers, and other stakeholders along the value chain. The usual time that it takes to produce one unit will be visibly shortened since the process is simplified without compromising quality and decision-making is done in real-time. Similarly, business segments are allowed to develop their full potential as they are individualized. Each segment has their own â€" and often better â€" understanding of the needs of their customers or the groups that they serve, so they are given more power or authority in making the decisions.Development of exponential technologies: Industry 4.0 will serve as an impetus or basis for further technologie s to be developed. Suppliers and developers of manufacturing systems and technologies will use them as basis on what to develop next. For example, more companies are adapting the use of 3D printing technology. Already, developers are looking into technologies that will be an improvement on the current 3D printing technology.Delivery of better customer service: Monitoring and feedback mechanisms, traditionally, also take time. With Industry 4.0 concepts and methods applied, logistics and stats are generated and collected in an automated manner, so response is faster. The business immediately knows if an adjustment has to be made, what adjustments are required, and respond faster to the needs of customers.INDUSTRY 4.0 DESIGN PRINCIPLESOne of the basic principles of Industry 4.0 is connecting systems, machines and work units in order to create intelligent networks along the value chain that can work separately and control each other autonomously but in a cohesive manner.Industry 4.0 ha s six identified design principles that manufacturers or producers use in their automation or digitization efforts for their production processes.Interoperability: The production process does not pertain to simply a set of methods or steps and involve only the people directly involved in them. It is an entire environment where all factors play a role. Assembly stations are not considered completely separate from the products that are being created, or the people that are working on them. Interoperability refers to the capability of all components to connect, communicate and operate with each other through the Internet of Things. This includes the humans, the Smart Factories, and the technologies in use.Virtualization: The monitoring of the actual processes that take place in the physical production chain will turn up sensor data, which will then be linked to virtual models or models created via simulation. This linkage will result in a virtual copy of the Smart Factory and this, in turn, will be used by producers in the setup of Industry 4.0.Decentralization: As mentioned repeatedly, Industry 4.0 supports faster decision-making, cutting through the bureaucratic red-tape that many businesses find too bothersome and time-consuming. Industry 4.0 supports decentralization, which enables the different systems within the Smart Factory to make decisions separately, without deviating from the path towards the single, ultimate organizational goal.Real-Time Capability: Industry 4.0 efforts are also centered towards making everything real-time: the gathering or collecting of data in each step of the process and even the feedback and monitoring stage. Assessing the weaknesses of each stage of the production process can be done quickly â€" almost immediately â€" allows management to make decisions just as fast.Service Orientation: Just because the Internet of Things is in use does not mean all the work is already done once the major players are interconnected. Services are still going to be required by the Smart Factories, and that is where the Internet of Services of Industry 4.0 comes in.Modularity: Flexibility is also another design principle of Industry 4.0, so that Smart Factories can easily adapt to changing circumstances and requirements. The individual models must be designed in such a way that they can be replaced, expanded, or improved on.BUILDING BLOCKS OF INDUSTRY 4.0There are nine identified technological trends that are said to be primarily instrumental in shaping industrial production.Big Data and analytics: These days, the manufacturing sector is finding itself inundated with increasing amount of data from various sources, and there is a need to gather all that data, collate and organize them in a coherent manner, and use the analytics provided by these data sets to support management’s decision-making. Business cannot afford to ignore the data coming in, as they might prove to be very useful when it comes to optimization of product ion quality and service, reduce energy consumption, and improve efficiencies in the production process. For example, data can be collected from the various phases of the production process. These large amounts of data will be analyzed in correlation with each other in order to identify phases with redundant processes that may be streamlined. To sum it up, there are 6 C’s in big data and analytics with respect to the Industry 4.0 environment. They are:Connection, which pertains to sensors and networks;Cloud computing;Cyber, which involves model and memory;Content/Context;Community, or sharing and collaboration between and among stakeholders; andCustomization.Autonomous robots: The use of robots in the manufacturing process is no longer new; however, robots, too, are subject to improvements and evolution. Creators of these robots are designing them to be more autonomous and interactive, such that they are no longer simply tools used by humans, but they are already integral work units that function alongside humans.Simulation: In the past, if manufacturers wanted to test if a process is working efficiently and effectively or not, trial and error is required. Soon, they learned the process of simple simulation to cut down on setup times. With another industrial revolution looming, simulations will become more advanced and extensive, such that they will play more major roles in the optimization of production, as well as product, quality.Horizontal and vertical system integration: Linkages are essential in any business for it to flourish, and the concept of having fully integrated IT systems is something that Industry 4.0 aims for. Imagine a manufacturing sector where engineering, production, marketing and after-sales are closely linked together. Similarly, companies will also be more integrated, giving rise to data integration networks and value chains that are fully automated. Collaboration among companies and industries will surely be facilitated. The industrial I nternet of Things (IoT): Embedded computing and networking are seen to be requirements if a manufacturer wants its processes to be fully integrated and automated. The industrial Internet of Things will make this possible, since field devices will be designed and equipped for networking, so that they are able to interact and communicate with each other, while also becoming connected with a control center or command.Cyber security: As more and more companies are going online, there is an increasing demand for higher security, considering the amount and nature of data or information that are uploaded or shared in networks. Industrial systems are becoming increasingly vulnerable to threats. To address this, cyber security measures have to be put in place. The cloud: The large data sets involved in Industry 4.0 means data sharing will have a broader reach or range. The usual cloud-based software that a manufacturing company has been using in the past may no longer be enough to hold all th at data. Thanks to the continuous efforts of developers, cloud technologies are improving, becoming more enabled for manufacturing and production systems.Additive manufacturing: Customization of products is one way for manufacturers to improve product quality. Fortunately, additive manufacturing is making this possible. It enables manufacturers to come up with small batches of products that are customized in ways that offer more value to end users, while reducing cost and time inefficiencies for the manufacturer.Augmented reality: Businesses are increasingly relying on mobile technologies to carry out its business processes, from production to marketing and after-sales support. In order to carry them out, they are turning more and more towards the use of augmented-reality-based systems. One advantage of these augmented reality-based systems is providing real-time data or information, resulting to decision-making that is also performed in real time.CHALLENGES AND THE FUTURE OF INDUSTR Y 4.0A simple automation process is not without its obstacles or stumbling blocks that it must overcome in order for it to be fully implemented, operational and successful. The same goes for Industry 4.0. It, too, is subject to several key challenges that must be addressed if it is to be fully adapted by the manufacturing sectors all over the globe.Industry 4.0 implementation requires large amounts of investmentIt costs money to automate a single part of a process; automating an entire production process or value chain will definitely cost more than a lot of money, it requires huge sums. In Germany, for example, the manufacturers are expected to invest €250 billion in the next ten years as they adapt manufacturing process to be incorporated with Industry 4.0 concepts.Demand for an upgraded workforceProducers and other businesses in the manufacturing sectors will have to look into their workforces more closely, particularly with their competencies. Long-term or strategic workforce planning is called for, and they are likely to focus on a workforce with superior IT skills and competencies.Calling for an upgraded workforce is not as easy as it seems since, as things stand, there are several concerns that are appended to this challenge:Lack of skill sets or competencies needed for Industry 4.0 implementation: There is no lack when it comes to talent, but it is a fact that the talent that we currently have are not necessarily up to par with the expectations for the full implementation of Industry 4.0. As things stand today, there is a lack of the adequate competencies or skill sets. Hopefully, in the near future, this inadequacy will be filled, thanks in large part to educational institutions revamping their curriculum to address this issue.Displacement of low-skilled workers and laborers: This is another challenge that is an offshoot of upgrading the workforce. There is a constant worry in economies that automation will put greater emphasis on information techno logy professionals and those that are directly engaged in the mechanical-engineering aspect of things, completely displacing the workers who belong to the low-skilled group. The demand for Industry 4.0-capable systems and machinesSuppliers and developers of manufacturing systems need to step their game up in order to keep up with the demand for machines and systems that are Industry 4.0-capable. This means that the current suppliers and developers have to delve more into information technology and how it will be incorporated in the manufacturing systems that they come up with. In short, they have to reconfigure their own production processes. If they already have software-development capabilities in place, they still have to do more, because Industry 4.0 requirements are certainly going to be much higher.Standardization across industriesWhile it is true that not all industries are the same, there is still a need for some degree of standardization. Industry 4.0 does not happen in Euro pe alone, or in the United States. Connectivity is now on a global scale, and industries have to be covered by international standards in order for their interaction to be more defined and have a semblance of order. The first steps towards standardization have already been undertaken by Germany with its Plattform Industrie 4.0, followed by the Dialogplattform Industrie 4.0. The United States is not far behind, with the formation of the Industrial Internet Consortium or IIC, which gathered telecommunication and IT companies, manufacturers, producers and manufacturing systems suppliers. Another organization, the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition, was also formed by government agencies, manufacturers/producers, suppliers, technology companies and educational institutions to further sow the seeds of Industry 4.0 in the US.Data Security risksAs a greater portion of the global manufacturing sector is finding its way to using the Internet of Things, there are definitely greater risks to data security. Cyber security providers will also have to increase their vigilance and develop better security systems to protect Industry 4.0 from caving under the pressure and threat from potential viruses and other cyber attacks.General reluctance to changeNot everyone is quick or easy to adapt to change, even if said changes are geared towards higher profits or greater productivity. Some stakeholders are ingrained to be resistant to change, preferring to stick to what is familiar and, to them, reliable.Convincing everyone in the manufacturing sectors to automate their production processes is not going to be easy. Advocates of Industry 4.0 have their work cut out for them as they hope to get everyone on board, and that is not just limited to manufacturers and producers. They also have to get government units and agencies, technology firms, infrastructure providers, suppliers and even the general public, to get on with the program.

Analysis Of The Book The Grapes Of Wrath - 904 Words

The majority of people in the United States are lucky enough to have a place they can return to every night and call their home. Unfortunately, for the Joad and Walls families, this is not the case. The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, tells the story of the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers forced off their farm in Oklahoma due a bank foreclosure. Because of the circumstances they suffered, including being trapped in the Dust Bowl and economic hardship, the Joads set out for California in search for a better life. The Glass Castle, a memoir by Jeanette Walls, tells the story of her family moving from place to place during modern day poverty. Both novels clearly illustrate the daily struggles of living without a permanent home. Each family has unique qualities that assist them in dealing with issues. Self Analysis and Personality Diagnostic Tests - 2481 Words

Self Analysis and Personality Diagnostic Tests People are created uniquely and different one to another, which results in character and personality differences. The needs of socialising and workplace purposes, such as career development and organisation effectiveness have ‘forced’ people to be more aware and understand their potentials through self-analysis. It requires people to assess themselves as an object in particular event or experience, which enables people to gain self-awareness (De Janasz, Wood, Gottschalk, Dowd, and Schneider, 2007, p.8). Self-awareness is the ability of an individual in assessing others’ evaluations of self and incorporate those evaluations in one self-evaluation, which then would help determine his†¦show more content†¦People who score high in agreeableness means that people is trusting, humble, and more to a team player (De Janasz, Wood, Gottschalk, Dowd, and Schneider, 2007, p.23). Meanwhile, a person who scores high in emotional stability can be described as reactive while also worrying. Lastly, an individual who has high score in openness usually are curious, liberal, and has broad interests. In the Big Five Model, I had high score at Emotional Stability, which means that I have a weak emotional stability, whose characteristics such as excitable, reactive but also worrying and easily stressed (De Janasz, Wood, Gottschalk, Dowd, and Schneider, 2007, p.23). Argument Against the Death Penalty Free Essays

Argument Essay for the Death Penalty Every day through media streams, we hear news about murders, homicides, and killing. It is hard to spend a day without hearing about these things nowadays. We have our own right to our own lives, but that doesn’t mean we have rights to the person sitting next to us or anyone else. We will write a custom essay sample on Argument Against the Death Penalty or any similar topic only for you Order Now I’ve studied on this topic for almost a year now and I know main issues related to this topic and a few important historical movements related to the death penalty. In the past few years, the death penalty was a controversial issue in many pro death penalty nations like the United States, China, Iran and many more. Since 1990, more than thirty countries abolished the death penalty because it was considered immoral (www. deathpenaltyinfo. com). Supporters of the death penalty consider killing the person who killed others people and that supports why the death penalty is immoral in many ways. First, it violates religious views and beliefs, innocent people get wrongly accused and mostly executed, costs way too much money, and lastly it is not how we deal with crimes. California and Oklahoma were two states involved in the death penalty survey proving that it has reduced crime rate or not (Gorecki). The survey proved to be negative showing that the death penalty actually had increased crime rate rather than decreasing it (Gorecki). Professor Craig Haney of University of California at Santa Cruz conducted the survey on 800 citizens of Santa Cruz, they were chosen randomly by their social security numbers (Gorecki). Professor Haney conducted this same kind of survey back in 1989 when he received strong favor of the death penalty (Gorecki). In 1989, 74% of 800 citizens favored the death penalty, but in 2009, those numbers fell drastically to 44% (www. deathpenaltyinfo. com). The Supreme Court cases Ballard v. Florida, Thibodeaux v. Louisiana are some of the many recent cases of innocent execution that took place in less than a decade (www. deathpenaltyinfo. com). There are many other reasons that I will present later in this essay to prove that the death penalty is not a rightful way to punish a criminal (Schabas). To abolish the death penalty, we should replace it with life imprisonment without parole. Doing so will save us money and maybe increase budgets for things that communities require, it could save the lives of innocents from dying, no more violation of the Eighth Amendment and human morals, and no evidence that it deters crime rate. First, Innocent people are getting executed ever since the death penalty has been around. The death penalty has claimed lives of 141 innocent citizens since 1973-today with little over half being black and the other half are whites and other races (www. deathpenaltyinfo. com). The Innocence protection Act became a law in 2004 (Ross). Law had a huge effect on innocent executions because the law forced the Supreme Court to test the DNA of an inmate and match it with the sample found at the crime scene (Guernesey). Act also started charging money to the United States prisons for every wrong conviction made since the effect of the law (Guernesey). Innocent convictions were also caused by racism, bribing, eyewitness error, snitch, government misconduct, and false confessions. To stop innocent executions we should appeal to the courts to allow two different lawyers to have a look in at the same case for errors that could have been missed by one. Judges should not go straight on conclusion, but ask if anyone on both sides have a lingering doubt they might want to clear, and Secondly, the death penalty costs up to $117 million for up to four executions per year (Costanzo). Estimated cost for keeping an inmate in a cell until the execution date average around $90,000 – $95,000 (Costanzo). State of California itself has held 1940 executions since 1978 up until 2009; estimated total cost for 1940 execution was around $4 billion (www. deathpenaltyinfo. com). In comparison to the death penalty cases, life imprisonment cases cost 4 times less (Costanzo). The United States can save up to $12 million per year if the death penalty gets replaced by life imprisonment without parole (Costanzo). The American Civil Liberties Union reviewed the statistics on taxpayers’ money and concluded that, approximately $90 million goes towards the death penalty executions (Costanzo). Capital trails costs up to $11 million per execution comparing to $4 million for life imprisonment (www. deathpenaltyinfo. com). Almost everyone in the United States, whether they’re against the death penalty or not, complains about current condition of the US economy not being very good. Due to that fact, we should replace the death penalty with life imprisonment; this could save money for infrastructures, schools, colleges and health care and increase their yearly budgets. Biases also play a big role in determining who will and who will not get executed (Ross). Types of biases that I’m referring to are racial bias and class bias, and political bias (Ross). According to NAACP (National Association of the Advancement of Colored People), out of 40 percent of inmates on death row, 12 percent accused inmates are penalized due to the racial bias in their case (Winters147). Another study was conducted by NAACP, informing us that killers of whites are more likely to get executed than the killers of black (Ross). To avoid racial bias effecting capital punishment decisions, U. S. Senate suggested a Racial Justice Act, an act that outlawed any case that was suspected and held under racial discrimination, but it was consistently defeated (Bohm). Class biases are much more common than racial bias, class biases occurs when a lower class person gets accused and doesn’t have enough wealth to hire a good defense lawyer (Haag 167). Protagonist side would argue that the death penalty cause deterrence in crime rates, DNA Testing saved many innocent victims, even bible supported the death penalty, â€Å"Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image† (Genesis 9:6) and life imprisonment keep the fear alive inside victims’ family. The American Civil Liberties Union collected some data on crime rates over the past few years and concluded that, the pro death penalty states had higher crime by up to 46 percent than the states without the death penalty (www. aclu. org). Statistics showed that, Eventhough, crime rates in the pro death penalty states has decreased, crime rates in states without the death penalty had also decreased. In 2011, 11,221 people were killed in thirty-four pro death penalty states, whereas only 6,395 people were killed in sixteen anti-death penalty states (www. deathpenaltyinfo. com). DNA testing was first used in 1990s, but massive effect of that system took place in the September 2011 when it saved 273 lives of innocents that were once announced guilty (www. aclu. org). DNA system saved 75 percent of innocent convictions in past few years, but what about rest 25 percent (www. clu. org)? Now this could be where the class biases come in, rich people could force to not have DNA testing conducted with the power of their money, or poor people could not afford a tests like these once they started paying lawyer fees (www. aclu. org). Pro-death penalty people would also argue that if the death penalty is replaced with life imprisonm ent without parole, it would keep the fear of criminal being alive inside them. But think about other side effects the death penalty is having on the society, the death penalty is doing nothing but executing. As mentioned earlier in the essay, the death penalty does not deter crime rate, it kills innocent people, and it costs 4 times more than life imprisonment (Costanzo). The life imprisonment could save lives of many innocent people who would have been executed by the death penalty. Exactly what people are worried about are inmates escaping the prisons, but there are low chances of escaping, because according to the Bureau of Justice Department, in 2006, inmates escape rate was 3 percent for every 2 million inmates (www. bjs. ov). In 2011, numbers are around 1. 3 percent per 2 million inmates (www. bjs. gov). I am sure that if everyone knew all facts related to the death penalty, they would have never stood by it and it is not late to be so yet. By looking at the both sides carefully and patiently, I think we should replace death penalty with life imprisonment, because death penalty has many bad effects like high costs, innocent executions, different types of biases effecting final judg ment, violation of the eighth amendment and human morals. Whereas, life imprisonment 4 times less than the death penalty, and innocent people have a chance to be free if they are proven not guilty. It is not our job to take revenge on people, listen to the word of creator, â€Å"Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath†, for it is written: â€Å"It is mine to avenge; I will repay†. Liberty Essays (898 words) - Libertarian Theory, Sovereignty

Liberty Leviathan Liberty is the natural rights of all mankind. It was even created even before our time. Since we have so much freedom, we are in jeopardy by one another due to the fact that we threaten one's will. Competition, aggression, and warfare are always taken place for existence and self-preservation. This is the worse of human nature. We are always striving for peace and serenity, and we do everything that it takes to achieve security for oneself. We all want liberty, but in reality, there is barely any liberty here. As for an example, if a living aquatic animal was to reside all his life in water, it is restrained within the contour boundaries that separates land from water. However, in order to live peacefully without fear, we tend to give up our natural rights to attain our true liberty. Hobbes defines liberty in a different sense. He believes liberty minus all the things that you have to sacrifice in order to obtain true liberty. In other words, we have to surrender certain natural rights to achieve peace and harmony with oneself. He believes each individual can be threatened by one another causing them to be in a state of war. All subjects are willing to go any distance to preserve their own life. Since there are limited resources, each form could possibly desire the same object that will give him the power to continue his existence, resulting warfare in obtaining those objects will be a characteristic of the natural state of man. He believes warfare will be continual as long as seeking of power is continual, which leads to constant fear. In the state of nature, there is always competition, aggression, and warfare; therefore, there is no peace, harmony, and equality. Thus, this force the individuals to form a social contract with the sovereign. They are basically t ransferring their rights to the government to provide them with security and felicity. However, when entering a contract with the sovereign, the rights of the individuals will be formally restrained, which is the product of true liberty. The sovereign forms a set of natural laws that each individual will follow to prevent their extinction. Once the individual enters the contract, the individual has to obey the commands of the sovereign regardless if they are dangerous and dishonorable. For example, one must go to war to protect the sovereign when it is endanger even if one has to risk his own life to protect the state or to protect oneself. If one refuses to defend for the sovereign, it would not be consider unjust due to the fact that the sovereign must punish to maintain order in the government. Hobbes really believes that monarchy has what it takes to retain our tranquility. He believes if there is only man to rule, then there is no need to divide the powers among the others. The re will be fewer conflicts. He also believes that he cannot disagree with himself out of envy or interest, but assembly can, which can lead to a war. Although it is ruled by one man, he can still consider in hearing the people's opinion to give him advice to execute their needs. Simply there are only three kinds of government or commonwealth, which is democracy, monarchy, and oligarchy. While monarchy and oligarchy are dictated by rulers, democracy is ruled by the people. The only difference between monarchy and oligarchy is the number of rulers. Monarchy rules by one, which is a king. And oligarchy rules by a few dictators. In my opinion, I believe there is no alternative form of government that can protect our true liberty. If our sovereign is a democracy, we will be in chaos due to the fact that it rules by the people. That is basically starts from square one even before a government is created. There will be many conflicts in opinions and beliefs, which can lead to hatred among each other, resulting warfare. Things will be more complicated to accomplish to each individual's needs, which results failure of the government. Speaking of failure of the government, I also believe that oligarchy is also chaotic because conflicts can take place among the rulers. They can

Us on International Fishing essays

Us on International Fishing essays US action on International Fishing Disputes While the United Nations has passed several resolutions and treaties regarding fisheries, the United States has typically refused to ratify such measurers. UNCLOS III, the most comprehensive attempt at a unified body of maritime law, has yet to be given the consent of the Senate. The sticking provisions of this treaty primarily deal with provisions for deep-sea mineral rights. Many US companies have already begun exploration in deep-sea minerals and the UN convention calls for deep-sea minerals to be the common heritage of mankind. This, along with provisions for the required transfer of marine technology, have prompted Senator Helms (Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee) to oppose this treaty and effectively kill it. While the US may reject certain provisions of UNCLOS III, they did rush to utilize the provisions of the 200 mile EEZ before the treaty was officially adopted. In 1976 Congress adopted a bill known as the Magnuson Act. This piece of legislation made full use of the concept of exclusive economic zones extending 200 miles to sea. The intent of the law was to bring fisheries within that area back into the exclusive domain of US fishermen. This piece of legislation has been the hinge-pin in most US fisheries regulations since 76, and was most recently renewed in 1996. If the United States is often the driving force behind the proposal of many treaties such as UNCLOS III, why does the US fail to ratify them? In short, there is not a single area to lay blame. Procedural rules, American ideology, and the relatively increasing autonomy of US legislators all contribute to making passage of comprehensive treaties extremely difficult. There is a significant procedural and political disconnect between the executive branch which negotiates treaties, and the Senate which ratifies them. The executive branch, here primar ...

How to Write a Discussion Section of a Research Paper

How to Write a Discussion Section of a Research Paper How to Write a Discussion Section of a Research Paper The discussion section of a research paper is dedicated to interpretation of your findings and their significance. Here, you discuss what has already been found about the problem by other researchers, and present your fresh view on the issue, taking into consideration all evidence and facts. This part of a research paper is very indicative of your progress as a student. The discussion section can be considered the most important part of the research paper, because it demonstrates your analytical skills. A good discussion section needs a critical approach to the question, and your ability to synthesize the findings of your research. If it has revealed any gaps in the field, this is also a good section to highlight these gaps, and give your suggestions on the possible improvements. Also, your discussion should be logically structured. There are several types of text structures, so you need to decide which one will be the most suitable, considering the type of research you are conducting. How to Structure Your Discussion Section We can allocate two types of structures you can use to organize the discussion section – vertical and horizontal. Vertical structure of the text is comprised of information presented in a hierarchical manner, relating to general elements and more specific ones. The topic unfolds into subtopics, subcategories and separate arguments. You have to keep in mind, that from your point of view, the argument and facts are arranged in a descending manner, taking into consideration how you intend to communicate your thoughts, speculations and conclusions. On the other hand, your reader will perceive all information in an ascending manner, from more specific elements to the general understanding of your topic. The horizontal structure is formed by creating cohesion between your findings. This cohesion is achieved by means of language devices, such as conjunctions, references and omission of words or phrases that can be logically derived from a sentence. All facts, arguments and speculations should be presented consistently, using logical connectives and references. Which Type of Structure is Better There is no right or wrong, it just depends on your findings. The horizontal structure is especially relevant when you are conducting an interdisciplinary research. There is no hierarchy between independent disciplines, so you need a structure which will highlight the relations between facts that belong to different fields. Vertical structure employs the deductive approach to research. If you start proving your thesis statement from a generalization and build your way to a conclusion by analyzing separate element of the general notion, then a vertical structure is more suitable for you discussion section. Points to Consider Whichever structure you decide to choose, your discussion section should have a brief summary of the importance of your findings for the field you study. You can also give your opinion on possible directions for future research, but add only those, that could not be researched in this particular paper. If you give recommendations for further research, remember to avoid repeating your statements in the conclusion section of your research paper. There is no use in wasting space with repetitions, and it can give an impression that you were careless with your final edit of the paper. And finally, on account of the overall research paper, avoid using first person too much. It can distract the reader from the main point of the paper – research.

Smoking among Teenagers Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Smoking among Teenagers - Research Paper Example Not only this but also a teen’s exposure to cigarette smoke increases the risk of metabolic syndrome. Smoking during the teenage impacts the teenager’s overall health, lung efficiency, reduces concentration span as a result of which his or her academic performance is hampered. Youth is that period of our lives where our mind and body are at their peaks but smoking during teenage deprives one of giving one’s best performance in all walks of life (Hales, 2009-2010). The hazards of teenage smoking and its causes can be traced to the determinants of health as per the ecological model. THE ECOLOGICAL MODEL The ecological perspective on health includes individual and environmental factors. The ecological model stresses that for community assessment, it is important to look beyond individual factors and also incorporate organizational and community factors. As per the ecological model, behavior at the individual level is influenced by biological, physiological, psycholo gical and emotional states. The psychological aspect of teenage smoking is that teenagers have it at the back of their mind that smoking makes them more ‘cool’ and mature. Many a times a teenager tries the first puff just to imitate his or her favorite celebrity. The social and cultural beliefs of family, friends and peers comprise of the interpersonal level. Smoking behavior of a teen is influenced by family: for instance if one of the parents smokes, then the child tends to smoke too. Heredity is the main biological factor: for instance women who smoke during pregnancy are indirectly making their unborn children prone to nicotine. These children develop a liking for nicotine and also show quick addiction. Friends are part family members and usually a teen is more influenced by friends than by his family. Many teenagers testify that their friends forced them to take the first puff (Harris, 2010). The physiological factors for teenage smoking will include nicotine metab olism and excretion. Cultural beliefs are very correctly depicted in the promotions of the Marlboro Man (McLeroy, 1988). At the organizational and community level, economic, physical and structural factors influence behavior. This level encompasses educational programs, mass media, counseling, support groups and organizational incentives. Public policy is another domain at which assessment can be done for a community. The Public Policy shows the state’s stance on health and related issues. For instance public service messages against teenage smoking and awareness programs come under public policy. Not only this but also public policy includes national laws for teenage smoking like a ban on selling cigarettes to a minor (Harris, 2010). Relationships with family, friends, neighbors, contacts at work, and acquaintances form the interpersonal processes which influence health behaviors. These relationships are particularly more influential in a teenager’s life as his mind i s vulnerable and he tends to adopt common behavior in his surroundings. The way a teenager deals with stress is also influenced by these relationships. If an adult smokes excessively during stress than his teenage son would do the same under stress. If the same interpersonal relationships can provoke a teenager to smoke then they can also work as support systems in times of stress and rehabilitation (for smoking or alcohol addicts). However if a

Essay on the book Christianity in the first three centuries by Adolf

On the book Christianity in the first three centuries by Adolf Harnack - Essay Example Thus, the religion of Christianity has â€Å"become a power† (Harnack 312). Initially, Christianity has been known as a part of Judaism; subsequently, it has become one of the most dominant religions in the world. In its evaluation as a popular religion, it has attained a powerful grip on humanity. Harnack, by analyzing both historical developments of dogma and of the relation of the church to the state, along with missionary movement of Christians, investigates the expansion of this religion. Christianity has received a strong foundation to grow and the time too has been perfect in a certain sense, despite the stiff oppositions, constant attacks, enemies, unfavorable rulers and authorities. Harnack’s work is divided into three sections. The first section deals with the humble but dynamic beginning, with the background of Judaism, and the emergence of Jewish religion. Then it goes on to the mission, consequently segregating from the mainstream. The second section concer ns with the contents of the message that influenced the Christians with such a powerful force. The third section dwells on different methods employed, and hostility suffered in the voyage of the mission until it attained the recognition of the masses. This paper offers a critical analysis of Harnack’s work in relation to the mission and the expansion of Christianity. Review: Right at the beginning, in Book 1, Harnack brings to the attention of his audience Christianity’s germination on the fertile land of Jews and examines how it has fared then on. The context has remained favorable for Christianity’s growth. Jewish foothold has been very firm and their propaganda profound. Judaism gradually kept transforming in a philosophical context. However, afterwards, the religion has â€Å"presented itself in the eyes of the law and the authorities as a religion distinct from that of Judaism, its character as a religio illicita was assured† (Harnack 302). Simultane ously, the religion has blended itself into the lives and other aspects of the society in the east. This was syncretism, which looked like a unity from distance but is heterogenous in reality. When â€Å"Christianity came to formulate ideas of God, Jesus, sin, redemption, and life, it drew upon the materials acquired in the general process of religious evolution standing against polytheism.† Harnack showed that Jesus’ preaching and works are the base for further mission work and the impulse given by His genuineness worked as its spirit. The earliest followers, especially Paul, got this profound consciousness of being an apostle to the world. He was driven till the western ends of Roman Empire. The transition from Jewish mission to gentile mission is clearly shown by Harnack. In between, he argues against the Jews’ evilness and unworthiness of God’s grace. He takes it to extremes. In the gospels, first of all, one can find the obligation to go to the Jews and then the Gentiles. Jesus, however, did not give an explicit command for this, which remained further a field to think upon. However, His message was for the whole humanity. Harnack depicted Christianity as a syncretistic religion. But it is not clear to what extent this syncretism or the acceptance of ideas from others, and employing them for own understanding, was present in the words of Jesus and the

A Brief History of Lawrence Ferlinghetti :: Writers Poetry Poets Essays

A Brief History of Lawrence Ferlinghetti A prominent voice of the wide-open poetry movement that began in the 1950s, Lawrence Ferlinghetti has written poetry, translation, fiction, theater, art criticism, film narration, and essays. Often concerned with politics and social issues, Ferlinghetti’s poetry countered the literary elite's definition of art and the artist's role in the world. Though imbued with the commonplace, his poetry cannot be simply described as polemic or personal protest, for it stands on his craftsmanship, thematics, and grounding in tradition. Ferlinghetti was born in Yonkers in 1919, son of Carlo Ferlinghetti who was from the province of Brescia and Clemence Albertine Mendes-Monsanto. Following his undergraduate years at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a ship's commander. He received a Master’s degree from Columbia University in 1947 and a Doctorate de l’Università © de Paris (Sorbonne) in 1950. From 1951 to 1953, when he settled in San Francisco, he taught French in an adult education program, painted, and wrote art criticism. In 1953, with Peter D. Martin, he founded City Lights Bookstore, the first all-paperbound bookshop in the country, and by 1955 he had launched the City Lights publishing house. The bookstore has served for half a century as a meeting place for writers, artists, and intellectuals. City Lights Publishers began with the Pocket Poets Series, through which Ferlinghetti aimed to create an international, dissident ferment. His publication of Allen Ginsberg’s Howl in 1956 led to his arrest on obscenity charges, and the trial that followed drew national attention to the San Francisco Renaissance and Beat movement writers. (He was overwhelmingly supported by prestigious literary and academic figures, and was acquitted.) This landmark First Amendment case established a legal precedent for the publication of controversial work with redeeming social importance. Ferlinghetti’s paintings have been shown at various galleries around the world, from the Butler Museum of American Painting to Il Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. He has been associated with the international Fluxus movement through the Archivio Francesco Conz in Verona. He has toured Italy, giving poetry readings in Roma, Napoli, Bologna, Firenze, Milano, Verona, Brescia, Cagliari, Torino, Venezia, and Sicilia. He won the Premio Taormino in 1973, and since then has been awarded the Premio Camaiore, the Premio Flaiano, the Premio Cavour. among others. He is published in Italy by Oscar Mondadori, City Lights Italia, and Minimum Fax. He was instrumental in arranging extensive poetry tours in Italy produced by City Lights Italia in Firenze. He has translated from the Italian Pier Paolo Pasolin’s Poemi Romani, which is published by City Lights Books. In San Francisco, his work can regularly be seen at the George Krevsky Gallery at 77 Geary

British Imperialism in India

â€Å"All the leadership had spent their early years in England. They were influenced by British thought, British ideas, that is why our leaders were always telling the British â€Å"How can you do these things? They’re against your own basic values. â€Å". We had no hatred, in fact it was the other way round – it was their values that made us revolt. † -Aruna Asaf Ali, a leader of the Indian National Congress. There is no doubt that British imperialism had a large impact on India. India, having previously been an group of independent and semi-independent princedoms and territories, underwent great change under British administration. Originally intended to consolidate their hold on India by establishing a population that spoke the same language as their rulers, the British decision in the 1830s to educate Indians in a Western fashion, with English as the language of instruction, was the beginning of a chain of events, including a rise in Indian nationalism, that led to Indian resentment of British imperialism and ultimately to the loss of British control over India. One of the most important factors in the British loss of control over India was the establishment of English as a unifying language. Prior This in turn led to further resentment of British imperialism, and claims that military regulations were an attempt by the British to destroy the traditional caste system. There was, however, much suspicion that this declaration meant nothing and that Britain had no intention of relinquishing control beyond simple aspects such as health services, agriculture and public works (Cowie, 39, 1994). Ghandi†tms Western education allowed him to develop his radical technique of â€Å"satyagraha†tm or â€Å"truth force†tm, whereby laws were opposed with the force of truth and moral consciousness instead of violence. This movement consisted mostly of British-educated intellectuals, and ironically was made possible by the British encouragement of higher education, originally intended to create a middle management that could carry out simple administration jobs. Ghandi was â€Å"†shrewd enough to utilise the nature of British rule in India to win independence without too much bloodshed† (Masani, quoted in Wood, 32, 1989). With this in mind, the Montagu Declaration was issued in 1917, promising â€Å"gradual†tm and â€Å"progressive†tm self-government for India. As well as the moderate nationalism that grew within the Indian National Congress, extreme nationalism was also becoming prevalent. While earlier in the century, the English language and European political principles gave rise to the Indian nationalist movement, these were the tools used to strengthen the movement and to create unity among the Indian people. † (Cowie, 36, 1994) This Congress, however, had no power in terms of action and it can be seen as an attempt by the British to appease Indian nationalists who wanted progress. The Indian National Congress was the largest and most obvious nationalist group, formed so that â€Å"educated Indians†could express dissatisfaction with the British colonial administration and suggest reforms. Ghandi also gained insight into his culture through â€Å"discussion with English friends on religion, both Christianity and Hinduism, which he now began to discover on a philosophical level† (Masselos, 121, 1972). The publication of magazines and journals in English was also a great influence on the rise of Indian nationalism. to British colonisation, India was fragmented and multi-lingual, with 15 major languages and around 720 dialects. But in both cases there were actually both.
